The Instacar car value calculator tells you how much your car is worth—or whether the price of a used car you found on a listing site is realistic.
If you’re planning to sell a used car and want to know its value, if you’re about to buy a car and it would be helpful to know the market value of the one you’re looking at, or if you want a reliable reference for price negotiations—look no further!
Free car value calculation
In the Instacar app, you can check how much your car is worth for free. You only need to complete a few simple steps:
- Look up your license plate.
- Tap “Save as my own car” on the car’s details page.

How do we calculate the value of a car?
Many car owners search for similar cars (e.g., on listing sites) based on a few basic factors—brand, model, model year, mileage (km), fuel type—and try to estimate the car’s value from that.
The downside is that this method considers only a handful of factors that are manageable with human effort, and it captures just a snapshot of advertised asking prices.
For artificial intelligence, however, tracking and analysing the market 365 days a year, around the clock, is not a problem.
During a license plate lookup, Instacar analyses the car’s attributes and market data in real time—using hundreds or thousands of data points—and then identifies how strongly each attribute affects the value of the specific queried car.
That’s what the Instacar app provides.

While people consider only a few factors, AI can analyse car attributes at a scale of hundreds or thousands of data points.
Valuation for a wide range of used passenger cars
We created and continue to develop the Instacar app to support passenger‑car transactions. That’s why we calculate estimated market value for M1 and M1G passenger cars with up to 7 seats that were first registered no more than 22 years ago, across the 582 most common types changing hands in Hungary.
We don’t provide valuations for cars registered more than 22 years ago, because we can only calculate a reliable value up to this limit. Older cars have a wider spread of values.
With this age limit, we can serve 9 out of 10 valuation requests, since the average age of the Hungarian passenger‑car fleet is 15.6 years.
Differences between market value and price
Instacar determines used‑car market value on a mathematical basis. The estimate reflects the value of a normally‑conditioned car that matches the given vehicle’s age and mileage.
A specific car’s value can be higher or lower depending on how much better or worse its condition is compared to an average car of the same age and equipment.
When determining market value, we estimate a price at which a transaction—assuming an average condition—can take place between a private seller and a private buyer.
If the car’s condition justifies it, the actual selling price can differ upwards or downwards.
It’s important to note that estimated market value is not the same as the advertised asking price. The latter usually includes a buffer for negotiation and, if the seller is a dealership, dealer margin and business profit—as well as costs related to selling the car (storage, overhead, advertising, administration, etc.).
New: Valuation without a license plate? Yes!
We know you don’t always have a license plate number at hand—for example, if you’re just browsing, or the car is imported, or temporarily deregistered.
That’s why we introduced parameter‑based valuation, which helps in these cases too.
What does that mean exactly? From now on, you don’t need a license plate for an estimate—it’s enough to provide a few basics:
- make and model,
- fuel type, model year, mileage,
- and a custom identifier name that you choose (e.g., “grey Golf — neighbour’s”).
Instacar then performs the valuation the same way as with a license plate: using real market data and artificial intelligence to determine how much a car with the given parameters is worth.
This feature can be especially useful:
- if you’re just collecting information,
- if there is no (known) license plate,
- if you want a quick, approximate picture of the car’s value.
Parameter‑based valuation is available on the Instacar home screen, directly under the license plate field.
