With the bonus–malus rating system, insurers reward claim‑free driving (this is the bonus) and penalize claims by reducing discounts and applying a surcharge (this is the malus).
In MTPL (KGFB) calculators you need to provide your bonus–malus class because it affects the price of compulsory insurance. With accident‑free driving you can expect a lower premium; if you cause an accident, the amount payable can increase significantly.
Bonus–malus levels
The bonus–malus system contains the following levels:
- B10 – Bonus 10: the best level, which may result in a lower premium.
- B09
- B08
- B07
- B06
- B05
- B04
- B03
- B02
- B01
- A00 – Starting level: everyone starts in class A00.
- M01
- M02
- M03
- M04 – Malus 04: the worst level, which can mean a higher, more expensive premium.
Starting from A00, if you do not cause an accident during the insurance year, you move to B01. (See the A00 row and the “0 claims” column.) The following year, starting from B01, if you remain claim‑free you move to B02.
The same driver starting from A00, if they cause 1 accident, receives class M02. (This can be avoided only by reimbursing the insurer for the claim amount. You have 45 days from receiving the notification about the claim payment.)
When taking out an MTPL contract, if you provide false information, the insurer may classify you into the worst M04 class.

Bonus–malus when selling a car
If you sell your passenger car and—within the same vehicle category—buy another one, your bonus–malus class can be transferred to the new car (within 2 years).
Checking your compulsory insurance
In the Instacar app you can easily check MTPL by license plate, without Ügyfélkapu.
Soon you will also be able to use the Instacar MTPL (KGFB) calculator. If you find a favorable offer among the 13 insurers, you can cancel your previous contract using our MTPL cancellation template.
