What costs do we calculate with?
Authenticity inspection (from 1 February 2025)
The purpose of this official procedure is to verify the vehicle’s identification data and the authenticity of its documents. Legally the cost is borne by the seller, but in practice it is often split.
Authenticity inspection fees from 1 February 2025:
- Up to 1,400 cm³ (and fully electric passenger cars): HUF 22,950
- 1,401–2,000 cm³: HUF 24,975
- Above 2,000 cm³: HUF 27,000
Previously:
- Up to 1,400 cm³: HUF 17,000
- Up to 2,000 cm³: HUF 18,500
- Above 2,000 cm³: HUF 20,000
License plates (from 1 February 2025)
Most of the time the car already has license plates, in which case this cost doesn’t apply. However, if you need plates—or you want a special, personalised or custom plate—the fee can run into hundreds of thousands of forints.
License plate fees from 1 February 2025:
- Standard plate (1 pair): HUF 11,475
- Standard plate (single): HUF 7,425
- Special plate (1 pair): HUF 20,250
- Individually selected plate: HUF 151,810
- Custom-manufactured plate: HUF 587,250

- Standard plate (single): HUF 5,500
- Special plate (1 pair): HUF 15,000

Acquisition duty (from 1 January 2025)
Many people forget to plan for the acquisition duty (paid transfer duty), even though it is typically the biggest item. It’s harder to calculate manually, because the amount depends on both the vehicle’s age and its engine power.

Vehicle title certificate (“törzskönyv”)
The fee for the document that proves ownership is HUF 6,000, unchanged in 2025.
Registration certificate (“forgalmi engedély”)
The fee for the document that proves the vehicle may be used on public roads is HUF 6,000, unchanged in 2025.
